Room with a view…

This was the mosque outside our room in Istanbul. It was snowing quite heavily when I took this picture but can’t really tell. The calls for prayer started veeeery early!!

If you are planning a visit then you must check out Hotel Ada in the “old town”, it was brilliant

Istanbul and other things…

So we’ve been in Istanbul for two nights… Had a day off from driving and carried out some express sightseeing of mosques and the Grand Bazaar which were all great. We have also stopped in at ANZAC Cove which was really good to experience. It’s a beautiful spot with a lot of respect shown for our boys… pics to follow soon.

If you have been watching our tracker then you may notice we are now going backwards. We have done a lot thinking and after taking on board some peoples concerns regarding our Syria route we have found an alternative but at a high cost and the potential forfeit of our Egypt tour. We are now bound for (near) Athens and will be departing here again on Monday. Pretty gutting really but we knew it may end up this way.

The “Med”…

So this is Greece. Not sure how inspired I am to return for a “summer” holiday :-/ although the weather was MUCH better than the whole of Italy.

Our drive from the Italian ferry took us almost to the other side of Greece within an easy drive of the Turkish border… Probably would have continued through to near Istanbul but after using all our €’s on the ferry over night we have a pile of toll charges to pay at the bank that is only open on Monday’s. Well planned eh.

Overnight ferry from Italy to Greece

All loaded up for the overnight ferry from Italy to Greece. The loading procedure wasn’t exactly intuitive, but overall it was quite a slick operation. Good night’s sleep, ready for the next day’s driving.

Note the shiny truck. “Had” to wash it after all that snow, ice and salt.

Wherefore art thou?

Verona! Tis beautiful too… Arrived this evening and have had a brief/very cold wander through the streets of the old town. One of the most pretty Italian cities I’ve seen and we only had a couple of hours in the dark. I got in trouble for venturing into the “it’s better than Florence!” territory.

Attempting to reach Bari tomorrow but it will be a long day that involves getting up very early, not our best attribute at all.

One night in Zurich!

We have been lucky enough to spend the evening with two Zurich locals, gorgeous dinner at Josef restaurant and a cozy nights sleep in Marco’s spare room. Aren’t we lucky! Chilly though :-/ good prep for Kilimanjaro

Day two starting now, off to get our breaky and then we are back on the road towards Switzerland. We should make it to Zurich tonight at a minimum but then yesterday’s driving plan didn’t exactly work out as we hoped! Best get used to that scenario I’m guessing x
